The eyes are a very complex and important organ in the human body. For many of us, it is one of the first ways we are able to identify with the world around us. It is important we do all we can to maintain the health of our eyes. Here are a few tips you can use to ensure your eyes are healthy as possible.

  1. Eat Foods that Promote Good Eye Health

There are many foods that contain the vitamins and minerals your eyes need to stay healthy. As most of us know, carrots are very good for your eyes. Vitamin A, which gives carrots their orange color, helps your eyes to function properly. Additionally, it is beneficial to eat dark, leafy greens. These super foods have lots of antioxidants, which help to reduce the risk of cataracts and degeneration of the eye. Foods that are known to have a similar effect include citrus fruits, berries, and eggs. Also try to eat fish such as salmon and tuna, which are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. Research has shown that those who eat diets rich in these acids are 40% less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration (WebMD).

Similar to your other body parts, your eyes sometimes require protection. Especially during the summer months, it is important to wear sun glasses to protect your eyes from strong UV rays. These strong rays effect the cells in your eyes which can ultimately lead to a decrease or loss of vision.

Your eyes require protection from other elements as well. Safety goggles should be worn when working with materials that may produce particles or fumes. Whether you are weed-whacking your lawn or using spray paint, it is always a good idea to give your eyes protection from these potential hazards.

  1. Don’t Let Your Eyes Get Tired!


There are several different reasons why your eyes may become tired, often putting an unnecessary strain on them. In today’s technologically advanced world it is easy to spend too much time staring at computer screens and televisions. Many people use computers for work and spend much of their day looking at a monitor. It is recommended you take a short break from looking at your monitor at least every 20 minutes. Closing your eyes for a full 5 seconds will help them to refocus and stay properly lubricated. Another reason our eyes become tired is because we don’t get enough sleep! Like the rest of your body, your eyes need an appropriate amount of rest to be able to function properly. Lastly, if you are prescribed glasses or contact lenses, make sure you wear them! Not using your glasses or contacts will force your eyes to work harder to see things, causing them to become tired sooner.

  1. Wash Your Hands & Avoid Touching Your Eyes


Although it may feel good at the time, it is not a good idea to rub your eyes, especially if your hands are dirty. As a general practice, it is always good to wash your hands frequently to rid yourself of germs and bacteria that are a potential harm to your health. Although you can’t always see it, our hands become very dirty through the course of the day and we touch just about everything we use. Be sure to wash your hands several times throughout the day. Also, you should avoid touching or rubbing your eye excessively, as this could result in damage to your cornea.  If your eye becomes irritated, try flushing it with water.

It is always a good idea to see your eye doctor on a yearly basis. A lot of change can occur in the eye over the course of the year. Make sure to schedule an examination so you can be sure your eyes are healthy and functioning properly. Damage to your eye can become worse if left untreated. Also, your eyes can begin to deteriorate without you noticing. If your eyes are becoming weaker over time, it may not be as easy to recognize as you think. Your eyes are very important to your quality of life, so be sure to take proper care of them.
