Irritable Bowel Syndrome 101: A Primer

This is part of a series of posts, providing basic outlines of the various conditions that The Relief Products treat. Today’s post is about Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS. For the rest of the “101” posts, please click here.

What is IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, commonly abbreviated as IBS, is a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. It’s not life-threatening, although it can certainly be inconvenient. For example, many IBS sufferers are forced to plan out their trips, and are constantly researching where the nearest restroom is while out in public. IBS is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, and is more present in women. Over 70% of the population of IBS sufferers are female.

What are the symptoms?
IBS is a very individualized condition. Some may suffer more from diarrhea, for example, than bloating.  However, there is a stable of common conditions – including abdominal pain, bloating, present mucus, constipation, and diarrhea. Many sufferers of IBS predominantly have constipation, or predominantly diarrhea — abbreviated as IBS-C, and IBS-D, respectively. There are a multitude of gastrointestinal disorders, and some symptoms may overlap. Please refer to this chart from this IBS Association for more information, and to rule out any serious condition.
