What About Tinnitus?

The American Tinnitus Association (ATA) works to raise awareness about tinnitus, as it is a widespread ailment that many are unfamiliar with. “ATA is committed to raising the profile of tinnitus as well as raising funds to advance research toward new and better treatments for all tinnitus patients,” said Thomas J. Lobl, Ph.D., Chair of ATA’s Board of Directors. “Our goal is to make sure that no single patient is told that they have to just live with their tinnitus.”

Tinnitus, also known as “ringing in the ears” is often described as the sensation of buzzing, ringing, chirping, or other high pitch noises that occur in the ear without an actual sound being present. The symptoms’ intensity and severity vary from person to person. Some experience constant sound, while others only experience the symptoms when there is a lack of actual noise around them. Additionally, the volume of the perceived sound can also vary.

Tinnitus is an audiological and neurological condition which is often caused by over-exposure to loud noises. However, there are other causes such as damage to the inner ear, age, and certain medications. Those who work near loud noises including carpenters, pilots, military personnel, musicians, landscapers, etc., are at greater risk. The severity of the condition may vary, from a small annoyance to a crippling debilitation. With over 50 million Americans suffering from Tinnitus, it has become one of the most common health problems in the country.
